With all of the strange things we hear being called 'music' these days, it's easy to think that there aren't any positive or uplifting songs out there. This is especially true when you consider that you can't even understand the words half the time! When I think of genres such as 'gangsta rap' or 'death metal', I'm glad I don't. There are, however, several songs that I find inspirational and uplifting. These aren't new songs, but they are still very positive and remind us that we need to love ourselves and be happy just the way we are. When you consider how a lot of tween and teen girls feel about themselves and the pressures they're under, this is a very welcome sentiment.
Whitney
Houston (RIP) has come out with several songs that encourage us to
see ourselves as the beautiful people we are. For instance, here are
some words from her song, 'One Moment In Time':
Each
day I live, I want to be
A
day to give the best of me
I'm
only one, but not alone
My
finest day is yet unknown
(chorus)
I
want one moment in time
When
I'm more than I thought I could be
When
all of my dreams are a heartbeat away
And
the answers are all up to me
You
can read the rest of the song here.
Who
doesn't wish
for that moment? My favorite line here is 'my finest day is yet
unknown'. I remember that when I was in high school it seemed like
that was all life would ever be. I couldn't imagine any days coming
when I didn't feel
invisible. Maybe your daughter does too. Either way, it's always good
to hear that the best of life is yet to come.
Another
inspiring song Whitney Houston came out with was 'The Greatest Love
of All':
I
decided long ago, never to walk in anyone's shadows
If
I fail, if I succeed, at least I live as I believe
No
matter what they take from me
They
can't take away my dignity
Because
the greatest love of all is happening to me
I
found the greatest love of all inside of me
The
greatest love of all is easy to achieve
Learning
to love yourself, it is the greatest love of all
It's
pretty obvious why this is a good song to sing to yourself when times
get tough. You can read the rest of it here.
As
wonderful as Whitney Houston was, she isn't the only singer to come
out with songs about self-confidence. Here's some words from 'Video'
by India Arie:
I'm
not the average girl from your video
And
I ain't built like a supermodel
But
I learned to love myself unconditionally
Because
I am a queen
You
can read the rest of the lyrics here;
they only get better!
As
you can see, there are plenty of songs out there that have uplifting
lyrics that can help us as women to feel good about ourselves. They
aren't new, but sometimes we need to hear something positive that has
stood the test of time.
And
now for my own shameless plug-
Although it isn't technically a song,
here's a link to an inspiring poem I wrote several years ago.
The site it is featured on, Skirt!, is
also very woman-positive. It's by women, for women, so it's
definitely worth checking out!
